An undertrial on Monday escaped from police custody outside the civil courts, where he was brought for a hearing in his case. Supreet Singh alias Harry, who was lodged in Amritsar Central Jail, was brought for a hearing to the court, the police said. After the hearing, the prisoner asked the police for water.
On the pretext of drinking water, Harry went to a grocery shop outside the court, where at least half-a-dozen of his armed supporters snatched the arms of the policemen and the handcuffed prisoner escaped with them in a white car, leaving behind the police's weapons, the police said. A case has been registered and efforts are on to nab the accused, said Superintendent of Police (Investigations) Pardeep Malik.
