Kurukshetra: The intervention of microfinance in the socio-economic empowerment of poor India including women are showing substantial growth in performance of Self Help Groups (SHG). The delivery of microcredit to the poor is more effective and less costly in the organized form of SHGs in comparison to individuals who have become habitual of enjoying subsidies only. Opined Dr M M Goel, Professor of Economics & Dean Faculty of Social Sciences, Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra and his research scholar ,Virander Goyal in their joint paper Microfinance in India- An Evaluation of Self Help Groups Scheme presented at the Third European Conference on Microfinance hosted by University of Agder, Kristiansand (Norway) said there is considerable scope for effective monitoring and evaluation of the SHGs scheme. They also suggested that to improve efficiency and effectiveness in the scheme of SHGs, the ideal number in a group should be five.
The study revealed that the younger members of the SHGs are earning more than the older because of their marketing and entrepreneurial skills and capabilities which justify the encouragement to younger people by fixing the maximum age for the members preferably up to 40 years.
