Spurious milk products seizure: Campaign to be held for awareness

PNS

Alarmed and shocked over the seizure of unprecedented amount of spurious milk and milk products (MMP) across Punjab, the state Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Kahan Singh Pannu on Wednesday written to all the Deputy Commissioners to involve public, especially the wholesalers of milk and milk products, in the campaign.

Suggesting to continue with the raids against adulteration, Pannu has requested the DCs to hold meetings with sweet sellers, catering companies, hotels, restaurants and dhaba owners along with officers from Food Safety, Dairy Development and Police to sensitize them against buying and selling spurious milk and milk products.

At the same time, the DCs have been asked to warn them about the penal provisions under the Food Safety Act, 2006, which entails up to six-year imprisonment and Rs 10 lakh fine for buying and selling adulterated products and life imprisonment and Rs 10 lakh fine to the manufacturer, seller or distributor of adulterated or spurious products if it causes loss of life.

Similar meetings are also proposed to be held at sub-divisional level by the concerned Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs).
