Punjab local Government Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu on Tuesday took the initiative regarding the long pending issue of shifting garbage dumps in the cities of Amritsar, Jalandhar and Bathinda by bringing on board all the three local MlAs.

The move is significant as it was one of the issues that figures in the election manifesto of the Congress party.

For the purpose, Sidhu has also constituted a high-level committee comprising Additional Chief Secretaries (ACS) Revenue, ACS local Government, Principal Secretary Rural Development and the concerned Deputy Commissioners and Municipal Commissioners of the respective areas.

This panel has been mandated to search for suitable chunk of 50 acres of land around these cities which could be used for garbage dumps.

Already, the state Finance Minister Manpreet Badal has assured that the Government will provide the requisite funds for the same.

Detailed deliberations have also been held with the Department regarding various options in this regard.

“This matter is a top priority as it directly affects the lives of people of these cities,” he said while reiterating his resolve to serve the people and address their grievances expeditiously.
