Sangharsh Samiti not to withdraw campaign until gazette notification

Even as the Union Government has sought recommendation of National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) regarding inclusion of Jats in Other Backward Class (OBC) category at Central level, the Akhil Bharatiya Jat Aarakshan Samiti seems to be in no mood to relent saying it would not withdraw its campaign until a gazette notification is issued.

The Samiti had recently threatened the Union Government to show black flags to Republic Day parade in Delhi on January 26 if it does not accord the Jats OBC status by then. The Jats in Haryana have already got 10 per cent reservation in Government jobs and educational institutes under Special Backward Class (SBC) category.

Om Prakash Dhankhar, national secretary of the Jat Aarakshan Samiti said though the Samiti welcomed the Union Governments’ move asking the NCBC to give its recommendation on including the Jats in OBCs but would wait for the gazette notification in this regard before taking any decision about the ongoing reservation campaign.

“We shall not withdraw our reservation campaign until a gazette notification regarding inclusion of Jat community in OBCs is issued. Hence, we have decided to wait for the gazette notification before deciding further course of action,” said Dhankhar, adding that the Samiti had struggled hard to make the Union Government to consider their long-pending of OBC status for the Jat community.

Expressing disappointment over the Government not including Jats of Jammu & Kashmir, Gujarat and Maharashtra States under the reservation benefit, he said the Samiti had demanded OBC status for Jats across the nation instead of merely nine States.  “We shall raise the issue again to press the Government for including the three States along with nine others in OBC category as Jats of these States also need reservation benefit following their weak economical condition,” said Dhankhar, adding that a meeting of the Samiti would soon be convened to consider the development.

He urged the Union Government to issue the gazette notification regarding inclusion of Jats in OBCs at the earliest so that they could announce the ending of their year-long campaign to get the reservation at Centre.
