Punjab Government on Wednesday asked the Panchayats to hold Gram Sabha session of Rabi season in the month of June.
“Panchayats must hold two Gram Sabhas one each in Rabi and Kharif seasons. This makes participation village voters and residents in the development activities of the villages and also brings transparency in the working of panchayats,” said the state Rural Development and Panchayat Minister Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa.
He said that Gram Sabha is the most important pillar providing strong base to the democracy.
Asking the Panchayats to hold Gram Sabhas rising above from groupism, Bajwa said that when Panchayats do not hold session of Gram Sabha, the atmosphere of fear and discomfort increases.
Bajwa said that the officers of the concerned departments should also be called in the Gram Sabha session so that most of the problems related to the villages could be settled on the spot. “Panchayats present their performance report in the Gram Sabhas and villagers also get a platform to present their views about the development issues of the villages. The Gram Sabha gives strength to the development works and this also plays a vital role in achieving Panchayat awards at national level,” he said.
