Bathing in the golden rays of the sun, Punjab is turning its rooftops into powerhouses of clean energy. In a bold step towards sustainability, the state has installed rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) panels on 4,474 government buildings, harnessing the limitless energy of the sun to generate over 4.9 crore units of electricity annually. This ambitious move not only reduces Punjab’s dependence on conventional power sources but also paves the way for a greener, more energy-efficient future. Looking ahead, the Punjab Government has set a target to add another 20 MW of solar power by expanding rooftop installations on government buildings in the financial year 2025-26.

Punjab New and Renewable Energy Sources Minister Aman Arora highlighted that these grid-connected solar panels generate electricity directly at the consumer point, reducing network losses and boosting efficiency. The surplus power is seamlessly fed back into the grid, assisting Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) in meeting its renewable energy commitments as mandated by the Electricity Regulatory Commissions. He emphasized that this project is a major milestone in Punjab’s long-term vision for clean energy.

The Government has been consistently working to decarbonize the power sector and promote clean energy. Arora emphasized that solar PV technology is one of the most effective renewable energy sources, given its ability to generate clean power while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The government is committed to providing a cleaner environment by reducing reliance on fossil fuels and transitioning towards sustainable energy solutions.

In addition to environmental benefits, the expansion of solar energy will lead to cost savings on electricity bills for government institutions. The project will also support the local economy by creating job opportunities in the renewable energy sector. The adoption of solar power is expected to improve Punjab’s energy security, reduce power shortages, and contribute to the overall economic development of the state.
