Punjab Government has approved an ambitious plan to construct three new sudhar ghars (jails) — at Amritsar, Bathinda, and Sri Mukatsar Sahib — with an investment of Rs442 crore.

The construction work is expected to commence from October, and the three jails would be completed till March 2015.

“Punjab Government is working on the agenda of upgrading the infrastructure and the number of sudhar ghars in the state to provide better in house faculties and to decongest the sudhar ghars from the inflow of the inmates,” said the State Public Works Department Minister Sharanjit Singh Dhillon.

He added that the building construction wing of the PWD would construct these three Sudhar Ghars.

Dhillon said that all these three Sudhar Ghar (Jails) are expected to be completed within 18 months.

“Construction work of Amritsar Sudhar Ghar would be constructed with the estimated cost of Rs 156 crore, Bathinda Sudhar Ghar with Rs195 crore and Sri Mukatsar Sahib Sudhar Ghar would be constructed with the estimated cost of Rs91 crore,” he added.

“Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has taken keen interest in upgrading the physical infrastructure of Sudhar Ghars. Rs 442 crore has been set aside by the government for this task,” he added.
