Punjab Cong slams Govt for 'forcibly' acquiring land of farmers

PNS

Punjab Congress on Friday blamed the Badal Government for resorting to “impropriety, unethical and unconstitutional means” to forcibly acquire thousands of acres of prime agricultural land in a hurry, to deny farmers their legitimate right under the newly adopted land acquisition act.

The party blamed that the SAD-BJP Government in Punjab is in the process of “hurriedly” acquiring more than 3,245 acres of prime agricultural land as per notifications issued in various newspapers between September 5 and 13 — that is within eight days.

“Needless to mention, the UPA Government has recently replaced the obsolete 120-year-old land Acquisition Act, 1894, with the new ‘Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill, 2013’ which has been passed by both houses of Parliament and is awaiting assent of the President,” said Congress spokesperson Sukhpal Singh Khaira. “Badal Government in a  wants to acquire the thousands of acres of agricultural land to deny farmers, the benefits they are likely to accrue under the new enactment,” he alleged.
