The party also announced to contest the local body elections, scheduled to be held in January next, in the state on its party symbol. The announcement was made by the State party president Partap Singh Bajwa, while addressing a meeting of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) at Punjab Bhawan to chalk out the strategy for the elections.  “The local leaders would have the option to have alliance with non-Akali and non-BJP parties,” said Bajwa.

The meeting was attended by around 140 party leaders, including party’s district presidents, district in-charges and block observers initiating the party’s preparations for the municipal elections. The elections to 122 municipal councils and six municipal corporations are scheduled for January.Preparing for the grass-root level battle, the party has started a membership drive from Tuesday in the state to reach the target of 32 lakh primary party members by December 31.

Attacking the SAD-BJP government in the state, Bajwa said that people are “fed up” with the present administration and “want” a change. “Congress will have to unitedly approach them to initiate the process of change beginning with the local body elections,” he said.
