Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Tuesday told the Union Home Minister Amit Shah that “barbaric acts” like Lakhimpur Kheri incident “would not be tolerated”.

Channi, who met Shah at his New Delhi residence in the evening for the first time after assuming the charge as Punjab’s Chief Minister, expressed his deep anguish over the tragic Lakhimpur Kheri incident.

At the same time, Channi also condemned the manner in which the Congress party leaders were arrested, who were on their way to meet the victim families of this unfortunate incident, while insisting that this system must be stopped.

Also seeking the Union Home Minister’s personal indulgence to resolve the farmers’ imbroglio, the Chief Minister requested him to repeal the farm laws at the earliest. At the same time, Channi also sought Shah’s personal intervention to seal borders to check illegal supply of drugs and weapons; besides urging him to immediately open Sri Kartarpur Sahib corridor.

“I met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and urged him to repeal the three farm laws. I also asked him to seal the international border with Punjab to curb trafficking of drugs and weapons,” said Channi while alking to the media-persons immediately after the meeting

“I also told him that we'll not tolerate barbaric killings in UP (Lakhimpur Kheri). This system of arresting our leaders should stop. I requested him to open the Kartarpur Corridor at earliest. He ensured me that Government will take decision very soon,” he said while hoping for a positive outcome of the discussions held in a congenial atmosphere.

During the meeting, Channi, to prevent the illegal trafficking of drugs and weapons from across the border into the State, sought Shah’s personal intervention to seal the border saying that the “initiative will help the State in breaking the supply chain of drugs”.

Also raising the demand for re-opening of Sri Kartarpur Sahib Corridor, the Chief Minister impressed upon Shah to take an early decision in this regard so as to enable the devotees to pay their obeisance at the sacred place. To this issue, Shah assured the Chief Minister that they would soon take a decision to open the corridor after detailed deliberations.
