PU to participate in INO project in TN

PNS

The Physics Department of Panjab University, Chandigarh would participate in the prestigious India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO) Project being set-up near Madhurai in Tamil Nadu.

The Department of Science and Technology, Government of India has sanctioned a grant of Rs 1.50 crore in this regard. PU Physics Department has also closely contributed in the experimental part of the Higgs Boson research. INO Project is a multi-institutional effort aimed at building a world-class underground laboratory with a rock cover of approximately 1200 meter for non-accelerator based high energy and nuclear physics research in India.

The expenditure on the whole project is expected to be Rs 1600 cr, which is supported by Government of India. More than 50 scientists from PU and about 14 other Institutes and Universities in India have come together to form the National Neutrino Collaboration group. Research Team at Physics Department, Panjab University includes Prof JB Singh, Asst Prof Vipin Bhatnagar, Asst Prof Ashok Kumar and Asst Prof JS Shahi. During the implementation of project Engineers, Technicians and Research Scholars would also be involved.

Sanctioned grant will enable the group members, Engineers and Research Scholars to participate in all the aspects of this world class Neutrino experiments being set up in India. The Physics Department has been collaborating with Fermilab (USA), where top quark was discovered in 1995, KEK (Japan) where CP-Violations in B was discovered, the CMS Project at large Hadron Collider at CERN, Geneva, Switzerland, where the Higgs boson Particle was discovered in 2012.
