Punjab Police Deputy Inspector General (DIG) border Range Amritsar on Sunday dismissed Inspector Narang Singh who along with his team was held responsible for the killing of a convict Bikramjit Singh in police custody.
An official written statement issued by the DIG AK Mittal stated that Inspector Narang Singh posted at police district Batala had been dismissed from service under the provision of (b) to Article 311(2) of the Constitution of India due to his involvement in criminal case under Section 364,302 and 201 IPC. He was accused for kidnapping and keeping life convict Bikramjit Singh in police custody illegally without following the lawful procedure.
At the same time, SSP Amritsar (rural) Gurpreet Singh Gill has also been dismissed. It may be mentioned that on May 15, Police Commissioner Jatinder Singh Aulakh had declared Bikramjit dead as he was killed during police interrogation.
Bikramjit, who was undergoing life imprisonment for the last one decade in the Amritsar Central Jail was missing for the last two weeks as he was whisked away by the group of policemen. Aulakh had told media persons that Bikramjit was whisked away by the Batala Police without following the lawful procedure, interrogated inhumanly whereupon he died in custody. It was police team led Inspector Narang Singh who laid the trap, whisked away Bikram to Batala town where he was interrogated throughout the night and died during torture in police custody.
Aulakh had said, in an attempt, to destroy vital evidence, body of Bikramjit was thrown in the Bhakra river near Ropar. Police station Kiratpur had found the body Bikramjit floating in the river and cremated it when nobody came forward to claim it.
