Pink Brigade of Nari Jagriti Manch, engaged in social and public welfare works, on Sunday took up a unique initiative by selling onions at Rs 65 per kg.

The campaign, aimed towards bringing ‘relief’ to the middle class and also to create awareness against plastic bags by distributing free cloth bags, was held near Shree Hanumant Dham Temple in Sector 40. Eight quintal onions were sold at the rate of Rs 65 per kg.

Saying that onion is the pride of every kitchen, Manch head Neena Tiwari said that this is a small effort to provide some relief to the middle-class families. “Other social institutions should also come forward to promote such welfare activities so that people can get some relief.

The Manch has, so far, made people aware of the side effects of polythene besides distributing about 6000 cloth bags free of cost in vegetable mandis throughout the city.

She said that the forum has always been doing public welfare work, like marriages of more than 500 poor girls, artificial limbs to poor people with disabilities, bicycles to poor girls, and providing them charitable computer education and self-defence sports taekwondo.
