There are 4,698 trees belonging to 80 different species at Chandigarh’s Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER). It is for the first time in the history of PGIMER that the Horticulture Wing of the institute conducted the census of trees in the PGIMER campus, Sector 12 here, said an official spokesperson.

The census was done with an aim to know the exact number of trees existing in the PGIMER beyond 60 cm dia and the green cover of the institute. During the census, the trees were marked by writing numbers by making blocks of suitable size in the tree trunk.

The spokesperson said that the census is done in a very systematic way in which the common name, botanical name and location of each and every tree is marked in the latest sanctioned plan of PGIMER  which will help in future plantation in the institute, and also preview the location of trees while sitting in the office for any kind of future planning. Also, the wrong as well a dangerous plantation can be identified for rectification, he said.

During the census, it has been found that there is a old bohr (banyan) tree which seems to be more than 200 years old existing  near the site of 250-bedded hospital which should be considered as heritage tree of the Chandigarh, he added.
