The amount of penalty collected by the Dehradun Regional Transport Office (RTO) has doubled in the financial year 2018-19 compared to the previous year. According to the Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO) Arvind Pandey this is mainly because of the high amount of challan that violators of traffic rules are paying.

Providing information, the ARTO Arvind Pandey said, “As compared to the financial year 2017-18 the penalty we have collected from violators of traffic rules is double in 2018-19. In 2017-18 the total amount of penalty collected was about Rs two crore whereas in the financial year 2018-19 the amount went up to Rs four crore.”

He further added, “The main reason behind this is the high amount of challan violators of traffic rules are paying. For example if someone is caught talking on phone while driving or riding they have to pay fine of about Rs 3,000. Also, the strict enforcement also plays part.”

Giving further details he said, “Among the 10,000 challans, most of the drivers or riders were male. About 6,000 Driving License were also suspended and 1258 vehicles were seized.”

It is worth mentioning that despite all the efforts citizens continue to violate traffic rules. Authorities concerned continue to state that following traffic rules is something that citizens have to follow for their own safety too. However, according to some citizens lack of strict enforcement is the reason behind continued traffic violations.
