Pandemonium in HP Assembly

The second day of the Winter Session of Himachal Pradesh Assembly here, was adjourned on a stormy note as the ruling Congress and Opposition BJP could not reach a consensus to pick a topic for debate in the House.

The house witnessed unruly scenes including sloganeering against the government as the opposition BJP pressed hard for having a debate on the ongoing graft charge against Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh.

As the house began on Tuesday, BJP members Rajeev Bindal, Suresh Bhardwaj and Ravinder Ravi stood up and raised their demand for a debate on corruption cases against Virbhadra Singh, saying that they had moved adjournment motion on Monday. BJP legislator Ravinder Ravi alleged that Virbhadra Singh had tried to influence CBI probe.

As the Speaker in his ruling refused to accept the adjournment motion, BJP legislators came to the Well and some even climbed close to the Speaker's chair. As the opposition members continued to raise slogans, Speaker Brij Bihari lal Butail adjourned the House for half an hour at 12.40.

later, when the House sat again, the Speaker allowed a debate on the motion moved by Congress legislator Sanjay Rattan, in which the issue of inconvenience caused to general public due to demonetization was raised, BJP legislators again created a ruckus in the House.

During the brief discussion with the Speaker on the issue of graft charges against Virbhadra Singh, leader of Opposition, Prem Kumar Dhumal pointed out that the Speaker rejected opposition's motion to raise the issue of corruption charges against the Chief Minister on the pretext that it was a sub-judice matter, but allowed a discussion on demonetization, which is also under Supreme Court's consideration.

As the pandemonium continued even after the house met at 1.10 pm, Speaker Butail adjourned the House for the day.
