After a ban on meat in some parts of the country due to a Jain festival stirred controversy, The Haryana Government on Saturday clarified that no restriction has been imposed on sale of meat in the State.
An official spokesperson said that rather only appeal was made to keep slaughter houses in the state closed from September 11 to 19 in view of ‘Paryushan Parv’.
The spokesman said that in this direction, the Commissioners of Municipal Corporations, Deputy Commissioners, executive officers of Municipal Councils and Municipalities had been asked to appeal to the owners of slaughter houses not to slaughter animals during the festival.
The spokesperson said that every year the Government makes such appeals in view of religious festivals. In Punjab's ludhiana, a day’s ban on the sale of non-vegetarian items has been imposed for September 17 during the Jain festival in the jurisdiction of ludhiana Police Commissionerate.
The ban orders were issued on Friday by ludhiana Police Commissioner Paramraj Singh Umranangal, and the order has been promulgated under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC). The orders stated that the ban was imposed as the sale of such items on the occasion may hurt religious sentiments of the people, particularly of the Jain community.
The ban would be applicable at various places, including hotels, meat shops and places serving non-vegetarian food, for a day.
