With the inauguration of a unique CCTV surveillance programme in Nawanshahr, now known as SBS Nagar, the town has become the first Smart City of the region.
A total of 64 cameras installed under this to cover each moment of all the vital areas would ensure a comprehensive & round the clock (24x7) security cover in Nawanshahr city area.
Besides this, an ultra modern control room has been set up at the SSP office to monitor the feed of these cameras and further coordinating with PCR for prompt response.
IGP Arpit Shukla underlined the need for intelligent usage of available technology for keeping close vigil and further investigation. He said that soon other districts of Jalandhar Zone would follow this initiative.
SK Kalia, DIG, ludhiana expressed confidence that the modern police control room will act as the nodal centre for all the information & helpline queries pouring in through digital and wireless route. “By bringing the helpline & electronic surveillance mechanism together the SBS Nagar police aims at providing
more effective, efficient & timely service to the residents,” he added.
He also appreciated the support extended by the people of city for the project.
Snehdeep Sharma, SSP said the number of cameras will be soon increased from 64 to 96, thereby bringing almost every nook and corner of the city under e-surveillance. He said that earlier there were seven PCR motorcycles working round the clock in Nawanshahr area and the entire area of city was
divided into seven beats & each beat area was monitored by the respective beat PCR mobile team.
“On receipt of information from police control room, the police personnel manning PCR vehicles will promptly & pro-actively provide assistance to the local police in accident cases, incidents of law & order, traffic problems etc,” he added.
He pointed out that CCTV surveillance paired with PCR mobile team will lead to immediate response, effective decision making, easy accessibility, high visibility, guarding scene of crime till arrival of force, clear communication & proactive approach in tackling crime and other police situations.
“Since the installation of cameras, the city police has started getting the real time information of incidents which is helping them to analyse the situation in a better and transparent manner. To mention, during the pre-launch trial period one motorcycle theft case was cracked with the help of CCTV footage, the accused was arrested and 10 more motorcycles were recovered from him. Thus the CCTVs are turning out to be police saathi,” he added.
