Flying the coop since past few months, son of Punjab’s former Minister Swaran Singh Phillaur — Damanvir Singh — finally appeared before the Enforcement Directorate on Tuesday in Jalandhar to join investigations in the multi-crore drug racket case.
The Directorate authorities have reportedly grilled Damanvir for his alleged involvement in Rs 6,000 crore infamous high profile synthetic drug racket.
He was evading the authorities since past over two months when his name comes to fore during interrogation of dismissed Punjab Police Deputy Superintendent of Police Jagdish Singh alias Bhola in a drug racket. Bhola had told the police that Damanvir introduced him with Raja Kandola, a drug lord.
The Directorate issued at least three summons to Damanvir, slapping notices, but every time he failed to appear before the ED on one pretext or the other. He had also fled out of country earlier.
Damanvir reached the ED office to join investigations in the drug racket in connection with assets accumulated by him and his business connections with the Gabas.
ED authorities asked him about his alleged connections with Chunni lal Gaba, his sons and his business connections with the family. The investigations are being held in connection with the wealth amassed through the business of synthetic drugs. The ED had been probing the assets of Chunni lal Gaba and Damanvir Singh.
Gaba was arrested on June 21 from his Goraya residence and taken to Patiala where a court sent him to judicial custody till July 5. His two sons Gurjit Singh Gaba and Gurmej Singh Gaba had also been arrested. Chunni lal Gaba and Gurmej Singh Gaba had gone missing on June 19 after joining investigations held at the ED office here. But later both were nabbed.
Sarwan Singh Phillaur, father of Damanbir Singh was forced to tender his resignation as Jail minister from Punjab cabinet after the drug lord Jagdish Bhola revealed the name of Damanvir Singh in the drug racket.
