The arrest of woman in a drug trafficking case in Chandigarh is raising eyebrows about the increasing trend of women’s involvement in drug trafficking cases.

According to the official figures of the Chandigarh police, three cases have been registered this year, under the Narcotics Drug and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, in which females were found involved in drug peddling.

Sources within the Operation Cell said that more women are venturing into drug trade. Some of them are in search of quick money to augment their lavish lifestyle while some have entered into the business to fulfil their need of drug addiction. Moreover what makes women to enter into the drug peddling is that females are less likely to arouse suspicion, added sources.

Meanwhile, the increasing involvement of women in the drug peddling have become a cause of concern as the imprisonment of the woman could have disastrous consequences on the physical and mental health of their families, especially their children. On Thursday, Manpreet Kaur, a resident of Sector 49, was arrested by the team of Operation cell at a checkpost, erected near Advocate society while she was carrying 35 gm of heroin.

A police official got suspicious, as Manpreet tried to change her way, when she noticed the officials checking belongings of each passerby. During on spot investigation the police team recovered contraband worth Rs2.5 lakh from her possession.

Satbeer Singh, DSP, Operation Cell said, “Manpreet is a drug addict. She got into the business of drug peddling to fulfill her needs of drug addiction. She has procured the contraband to supply to a buyer in Chandigarh.”

The accused, Manpreet Kaur, aged 29, has been sent for two-day police remand by the district court for further investigation. In another such incident on Sunday, Operation Cell arrested a couple who are notorious drug smugglers in North-India and recovered 147 Kilogram poppy husks from their possession. Sources in the Operation Cell said that the accused Sakir Shekh and his wife Noor Jahan, residents of Mohali, disclosed that they had been involved in drug trafficking for a long time. They used to procure the contraband from various parts of India and then sold it in the bordering States of Chandigarh.

They were arrested by the police while the couple had procured 147 kilo of poppy husk from Madhya Pradesh to sell it to a client in Chandigarh, added sources.
