Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for well off people to voluntarily give up subsidised lPG cylinders has had little effect in the tricity as the figure of those who have surrendered their subsidy is just over 300 in the last two months. “About 324 well off people, including several bureaucrats, politicians and businessmen living in Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali have decided not to take subsidised lPGs and many are expected to do so soon,” said a senior official of Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Chandigarh.

IOC is a major share having maximum lPG gas connection in the tricity. In Chandigarh alone, it has 1.7 lakh connections in a total of about 2.5 lakh lPG connections, followed by 72000 of Hindustan Petroleum and rest of others including Bharat Gas and other companies. Officials refused to share the break up details of those who have decided not to take subsidized lPG connections. But politicians and buresucrats are in the list.
