Media coverage of Op Bluestar: SGPC takes u-turn, allows media

PNS

Hours after receiving a call from Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, the Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee on Sunday reviewed its previous order of banning media entry inside the Golden Temple Complex to cover the Operation Bluestar anniversary.

Taking a u-turn, the SGPC has now allowed the media coverage in the premises on June 6 — the 32nd anniversary of Operation Star.

It has been learnt that Badal had called up the SGPC chief secretary Harcharan Singh in the morning and urged him to reconsider the orders.

A day before, SGPC chief secretary Harcharan Singh, in a letter to Police Commissioner and District Public Relation officer, has sought the police help to keep the media away from the periphery of Golden Temple on June 6 morning when the anniversary of Operation Bluestar is to be observed.

He had stated that the media always interfere in the SGPC program, hence press coverage for electronic media as well as photo journalists would not be allowed as it may hurt the sentiments of Sikh devotees.

In a flip-flop, Harcharan Singh on Sunday said: “We are allowing the media with the humble request that they should maintain the sanctity of Golden Temple, since certain media people some time create interruption. We always required media coverage and support.”
