Taking a serious view of nonchalant attitude of the colleges towards sport events, the Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) has debarred its 11 colleges from its inter-college tournaments. Now, the colleges would not be able to participate in any sort of games to be organised by the university in future till further order.

Decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of Sports Department held recently at Indoor Gymnasium hall in the University. The meeting presided over by Director (Sports) Devender Singh Dhull also resolved imposition of financial penalty on the colleges so that no other college could dare to ignore the sports event being organised by the University in every academic session.

According to the sources, these colleges include Vaish College in Bhiwani, Bansi lal Government College in Tosham, Maharaja Agarsen College in Jhajjar, Government Women College in Gurgaon, DN Girls College in Faridabad, Dronacharya Government College in Gurgaon, law College in Gurgaon, Government College in Mahendergarh, Government College in Narnaul, Satjinda Kalyana College in Kalanaur town (Rohtak) and Vaish Engineering College in Rohtak.

“Inter-colleges tournaments and other sports activities are organised by Sports Department of the University every year to boost the sports besides providing a platform to talented players for showing their talent but it is unfortunate that several colleges do not take any interest in sending their teams in the tournaments,” said a top official of the varsity.

He informed that all the colleges were sent notices to ensure their participation in the inter-college tournaments but they failed to do so. In the given situation, the authorities had no other option but to debar them from the sports activities so as to make other colleges to ensure their active participation in the tournaments, he added. “The departmental inquiry carried out to find out the participation of colleges in the sports activities revealed that all the colleges were persistently failing to send their teams in inter-college tournaments for last some years following which such stern action has been taken against them,” said the official, adding that some other rules had also been framed at the meeting to ensure maximum participation of the colleges in the sports.

As per new rules, now every college would have to inform the University about their participation at least ten days before commencement of the tournament. Earlier, the colleges used to apprise the University authorities of their participation one or two days before the tournaments. Some colleges had several times sent their teams on the day of beginning of the sport events, he added.

“Penalty of Rs one thousand will be slapped on those colleges whose teams will come at the tournament on the same day. Besides, all inter-zone tournaments will be organised on the MDU campus this year to prevent controversy about the outcome of the matches,” said the official, adding that now only those colleges having adequate sports facilities would be assigned the responsibility of organising inter-college tournaments.  Sports incharges and assistant professors of various colleges affiliated to the University were present at the meeting and gave their suggestions to improve the sports activities.
