Mann misses 'At Home' at Raj Bhawan: Perhaps afraid of ceremonial cannons, quips Purohit

The ongoing political tussle in Punjab between Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit and the Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann took an amusing turn on Tuesday when the state’s constitutional head took a dig at the Aam Aadmi Party leader’s absence during the ceremonial ‘At-Home’ reception on the 77th Independence Day at the Punjab Raj Bhavan.

With a host of issues simmering between the two concerning state administration and governance, their differences manifested conspicuously during the annual ceremony, hosted by Governor Purohit, when the Chief Minister Mann’s absence didn't go unnoticed by the attendees.

As the media inquired about the notable absentee, Governor Purohit — who is known for his wit and affable demeanor — shared a playful observation. He said, while the invitations were extended to a range of dignitaries, including the Chief Minister, the decision not to attend was solely his prerogative.

“Invitations for the ‘At Home’ ceremony were extended to various dignitaries, including the Chief Minister of Punjab…The Chief Minister's office acknowledged the receipt of the invitation. However, the Chief Minister chose not to grace the event with his presence,” he said.

The Governor's explanation was delivered with a hint of jest, as he speculated on the reason behind Mann's decision. “The Chief Minister opted not to attend the ‘At Home’ function. His decision is in line with his own discernment; the Chief Minister might have decided to forgo the event perhaps he is afraid the ceremonial canons placed outside the Raj Bhawan,” he quipped, invoking laughter among those present.

The light-hearted remark seemed to allude to Mann’s previous mention in the state's Vidhan Sabha (during two-day special session in June), where he humorously remarked that the cannons outside the Raj Bhawan were meant to scare people away.

This witty allusion seemed to reference the Chief Minister's earlier statement in the Vidhan Sabha, where he humorously remarked that the canons were stationed to ward off people.

The 'At Home' event at the Punjab Raj Bhavan traditionally fosters an environment for diverse luminaries to foster connections and celebrate unity.
