An 18-year-old school student committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan in Maloya, on Tuesday. The victim was allegedly depressed over prolonged illness, police said. The deceased, Sandeep Kumar, alias Sunny, a resident of Maloya, was found hanging at his residence on Tuesday afternoon. Sunny was noticed hanging inside the room by his mother, who later informed the local police. A police team rushed him to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) where he was declared dead by the duty doctors. Meanwhile, the dead body of victim has been sent for post-mortem, said Harminder Singh, in-charge, PP Maloya. Even after conducting a thorough search, no suicide note was found from there, added Singh. However, police sources said that after talking to family members of the victim, it was ascertained that Sunny was suffering from prolonged illness, for which he was under treatment at PGIMER for last two years.

The family members of victim also said that Sunny had started remaining in depression due to his illness, which might have been the reason that forced him to take the extreme step. Sandeep was a student of Class XII in a Government school and his studies were affected due to his illness. The medical treatment of the victim had also affected the financial condition of his family, added sources. Meanwhile, on the statement of victim’s family, a case has been registered by the police and preliminary investigation in the incident has been initiated.
