UGC Fellow, Dalit Resource Centre, Govind Ballabh Pant SocialScience Institute Allahabad, Professor Badri Narayan spoke on the issue of “Democracy, Deprivation and Dispossession: Multiple Narratives of Democracy in North India”. Narayan talked about dominance of four Dalit castes i.e. Chamars,

Jatavs, Pasis and Dhobis, out of 66 Dalits castes in UP in terms of their eligibility and participation in the political domain. He attributed it to politics of number for their presence.  Another factor that counts is the urge on the past of particular castes to be recognized and counted. Education ensures in empowerment besides bringing visibility.

Dalit communities have come out with their newspapers and pamphlets. Organic intellectuals coming from Dalit communities have been publishing booklets in lakhs. In the form of BS, the dalits are no longer ‘voting citizens’ but are co-sharers in political power.
