The nationwide ‘Kisan Avkash’ call given by various farmer organisations evoked a mixed response in Haryana on the first day of the ten-day agitation on Friday.
Farmers reached mandis with fruits and vegetables as usual, though some stray incidents of growers being forcibly stopped were reported in various parts of Haryana.
Fathehabad saw agitating farmers stopping peasants and milkmen mid-way and dumping their vegetables and fruits on the roads. In Yamunanagar, the vegetables reached the market but were not allowed to be sold by the agitators.
Incidents of agitators dumping milk and vegetables on roads were also reported in Kaithal.
Districts like Rohtak, Sonepat, Jhajjar, Charkhi Dadri, Bhiwani were not affected due to the agitation.
During ‘Kisan Avkash’ protest, the farmers would not go to the cities to sell their produce such as crops, vegetables and milk from June 1 to June 10. On June 10, rallies will be held to raise the issues of farmers.
“Farmers in Haryana are supporting the ten-day agitation and have stopped supplying vegetables, milk and other items," said BKU Haryana president Gurnam Singh Chanduni.
He said that the farmers are protesting in a peaceful manner. This is the first day of agitation and it will intensify in coming days, said he.
The BKU leader said that they are protesting against the BJP led Central Government for allegedly not addressing their issues pertaining to low income, increasing number of farmers' suicides and rising debt.
“We are demanding minimum income guarantee scheme, implementation of Swaminathan Commission report and waiver of farmers' debt,” said he.
He added the farmers are forced to take this decision of ten days agitation as the Central Government has failed to help the farming community.
