Representatives of Birohar Barha Khap, which had some days ago asked the girl students above 10 years of age not to wear ‘objectionable’ attires like jeans or pants, on Thursday visited two schools in Jhamri village here to appeal the girl students not to use mobile phones and wear jeans-top during school hours.

The khap representatives made it clear that they had not proscribed wearing of jeans-top by girl students at the khap panchayat meeting held in Birohar village here on September 22 last.

“We had just suggested the girls to follow the dress code of their educational institutes instead of wearing jeans-tops in school/college time as such sort of objectionable attires provoke their male counterpart for indulging in eve-teasing, molesting and other crime against women,” the khap leaders told to the girl students during their visit.

In the given situation, girl students of above 10 years ought to abstain from wearing of jeans-tops likes attires to prevent the rising incidents of eve-teasing, molestation and honour killings in the region, they maintained.

“We have also appealed to parents of the girl students to convince their daughters for not wearing of jeans-tops during school hours. Such attire not only puts adverse effect on their school mates but also violate the dress code of their educational institutes,” said Rajender Dhankhar, a representative of the khap.

later, Dhankhar told media persons that the Birohar Barha Khap had launched an awareness campaign to persuade the girl students for not wearing the ‘objectionable’ clothes in school/ college time with an intention to check the crime against women in the region.

“This was the first programme under the campaign under which we have tried to motivate the girl students to ensure their valuable contribution in the move by not wearing the jeans-tops during school hours,” said Dhankhar, adding that they had received a  good response from the girls’ side on the very first day.

He informed that the khap leaders in various groups would visit other schools and colleges of the region to encourage the girl students for adopting their suggestions of not wearing ‘objectionable’ clothes in order to curb crime against women.
