As the candidates are campaigning hard in the polls, their spouses are not far behind. BJP candidate from Gurdaspur constituency Vinod Khanna’s efforts has been supplemented by his wife Kavita Khanna, who hits the road every morning, meeting and greeting enthusiastic voters and diligently listening to their concerns and issues.

Kavita Khanna starts her day as early as 5.30 am — does her exercise and meditation, meets party workers, and visitors, takes stock of day’s activities, ensures all visitors are well attended, and then begins her long day on road. In middle of her morning activities, she also ensures her husband, Vinod Khanna’s breakfast is prepared and served as per his dietary requirements.

“I enjoy every bit of my work. It is wonderful to see the energy and enthusiasm among people for Vinod and Modiji,” an energetic Kavita adds as she sets out for her day’s padyatra.

Kavita Khanna focuses largely on women voters. She attends more than 30 nukkad meetings a day and gives a patient hearing to their problems and makes a note of them. She further explains what Vinod Khanna had done earlier and will do for them and seeks their votes.

“God has given us everything. We have enough for a decent living and our only aim to be in politics is to do good for the society and the region of Gurdaspur,” she says.

“Employment, industries, agriculture, education, health care, women empowerment and tourism will be some of our key focus areas. We will get sanctions from the Centre for industries, colleges, more rail lines, and use our MPlAD funds to build hospitals, improve sanitation and introduce de-addiction programs,” she adds among roaring applause from happy supporters.

leaving no stone unturned to attack the incumbent MP from Congress, Partap Singh Bajwa, she asks “What has he done hereIJ The area is in shambles! He has cheated the people of this constituency.”

Kavita Khanna is not campaigning for the first time, she has been campaigning since Vinod Khanna’s first elections and is a hit among supporters. “She has a very amicable personality. She gels with people very easily. For women here, she is like a friend with whom they want to share their concerns. Everyone likes her here,” says a resident of Batala.
