Hry abolishes semester system

PNS

The Haryana Government has abolished semester system from Class IX to XII from next year in all schools of the State. The Chief Minister, Manohar lal Khattar, has given approval to abolish the semester system in Class IX and XI from the current year. However, the semester system will be continued for Class X and XII only during the current year as the students have studied as per semester system in their previous classes i.e class IX and XI during academic session 2014-15.

Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma on Monday said that the Department would conduct monthly test from Class I to VIII and semester system would not be followed in these classes. During the interaction session with representatives of all teachers associations and unions with Chief Minister and Education Minister on April 24, there was unanimous opinion to abolish semester system in the schools. This issue was also discussed in the meeting of Board of Secondary Education, Haryana on May 8 and there was broad consensus that semester system should be abolished because there was unnecessarily wastage of time of teachers in additional examination duties and examining of papers for first semester of Class X to XII during September and October every year.

Due to this, the teachers were not available for teaching the students of Class IX and XI during these two months. It was also emphasized that CBSE too does not have any semester system, said the Minister. Notably, the overall pass percentage was just 41.28 for Class X and 53.96% in the senior secondary (class XII) examinations declared in Haryana last month.  The pass percentage for girls in the secondary examination was 64.5 per cent, while the boys had recorded a pass percentage of 45.88 per cent.

In the senior secondary examination, the girls recorded a pass percentage of 44.6 per cent and the boys managed to get a pass percentage of 38.4 per cent. Recently, Haryana Government had announced to impart special coaching to the students of government schools of Haryana placed in the PA-R/ reappear category.
