Haryana Congress MLAs are likely to elect former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda as the leader of the Congerss legislature Party on Friday.

Congress general secretary in charge of Haryana Ghulam Nabi Azad will also be present in the meting.

A month ago, the Congress party had replaced its PCC chief with Selja taking over from Ashok Tanwar. Hooda was made the CLP leader and chairman of the election management committee.

In the recently held Assembly election, while the BJP won 40 seats, the Congress secured 31 seats. Dushyant Chautala’s Jananayak Janata Party came third with 10 assembly seats. The Congress nearly swept the Rohtak, Sonipat and Jhajjar belt considered to be the traditional strongholds of the Hooda family and the grand old party.

State party chief Selja said, “A meeting of the Haryana Congress Legislature Party will be held at 11 am in the party office at Sector 9 to elect CLP leader.” She said Congress president Sonia Gandhi appointed former AICC general secretary Madhusudan Mistry the central observer for the crucial CLP election.

Legislators’ opinion will be taken at the meeting and conveyed to the Congress president. Thereafter a decision will be taken to elect the new CLP leader.

Sources in the Congress said it was likely that the MLAs would pass a resolution authorising Congress president to name the CLP leader as it was the long held party convention.
