Himachal Police orders probe into viral video of cops beating a man in Atal Tunnel

PNS

Himachal Police has ordered an investigation after a video clip showing a man being thrashed by a police constable and some Border Roads Organisation (BRO) personnel in Rohtang’s Atal Tunnel went viral on social media.

According to the police, the incident took place on Saturday. In the video, a constable can be seen beating a tourist with a stick. The man is also kicked in the face and slapped by the security personnel.

Kullu Superintendent of Police Gaurav Singh said that a probe has been initiated in the matter. DSP Manali is heading the inquiry.

Prima facie, one police constable and some BRO personnel were involved in this incident, he said.

The Twitter users who shared the video clip expressed shock over the inhuman treatment of the man by the policemen involved.Notably, the 9.2-km horseshoe-shaped single-tube, two-laned tunnel has shortened the distance between Manali and Keylong, the headquarters of Lahaul-Spiti, by 46 km and travel time by nearly three hours.

Earlier on December 24, ten tourists from Delhi were arrested and their cars were impounded after they stopped inside the Atal tunnel and danced, leading to a traffic jam. 15 tourists, including seven from Delhi, were arrested on December 27 while two vehicles were seized for obstructing traffic inside the tunnel.
