Concerned over the fast depleting water table in the State, the Haryana Government is carrying out special drive with the assistance of the Central Government to spread awareness about water conservation and for undertaking water conservation measures in the State. As per the data with State Agriculture Department, most districts in the State have witnessed critical fall of 7.29 metre, on an average, in the past 12 years. Mahendergarh district had recorded the biggest fall of 19.45 metre, Fatehabad district saw depletion of 15.79 metre.
Also, Jhajjar and Rohtak districts had witnessed smallest depletion of 0.18 and 0.21 metre respectively. A spokesperson of the State Government said that a day-long workshop jointly organised by the Haryana Irrigation and Water Resources Department and the Union Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation on the topic of ‘Hamara Jal-Hamara Jivan’ was held at Hisar on Friday to deliberate upon issue of water conservation.
He said that the State Government was aware of the importance of each and every drop of water and a number of programmes were being initiated for its preservation. “It was informed in the workshop that a number of steps are being initiated by different departments for improving depleting water table and storage of rain water,” he added.
Only three per cent of total available water in the world is fit for drinking and irrigation. Out of this three per cent, 70 per cent water is utilised for agriculture purpose, 22 per cent for industries and eight per cent water is utilised in our daily life. The people should develop a habit to turn off the water tap after its usage and this would help in saving the precious resource, state the experts at the workshop.
