A special antenatal week “Surakshit Janani Saptah” will be organised in the entire Haryana from December 15 to 19 to check every pregnant woman at the grass roots level and identify high risk pregnant cases out of them.

Haryana Health Minister Anil Vij on Sunday said that the special antenatal week will be organized regularly on quarterly basis to mop up uncovered areas. He said that ASHAs and ANMs will mobilize and bring pregnant females of their areas at sub-centre for ANC checkups. Then, the ANM will identify high risk pregnant cases out of them and those women identified as high risk pregnancy would be issued the red colored mother and child protection cards, referral slips and referred to district hospital, free of cost by 102 national ambulance service.

At each district hospital special “High Risk Pregnancy Unit” (HRPU) has been established. The further management of these high risk pregnant patients will be done by Gynaecologist at these HRPUs. The main motto of this week is to get these high risk pregnant cases managed and delivered at institution by a specialist, thereby reducing MMR, IMR and still birth rate, he added.

In the entire state, about 5.5 lakh women become pregnant every year. Out of these, approximately 80,000 (15 per cent) are high risk cases. In these high risk cases, the mother or foetus has a significantly increased chance of death or disability. To reduce Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) and Infant Mortality Rate (IMR), these high risk cases need preferential, timely, adequate and complete services on priority basis during antenatal, intranatal and postnatal period.
