Haryana Speaker directs to remove absentee MLAs from VS panel

PNS

Haryana Speaker Gian Chand Gupta on Friday directed that the MLAs who do not attend the meeting of committees of Vidhan Sabha should be removed as members of those committees.

He also directed that the Legislative Assembly Secretariat should write letters to the MLAs who are constantly absent from the meetings of the committees.

The stern directions came during a meeting of chairmen, officers and in-charges of the Vidhan Sabha committees held under the Speaker here.

While reviewing the work of the committees, Gupta said that the MLAs who are not coming to the meetings of the committees should be removed. Their absence from the meetings of these committees violates the discipline and at times, there is also a problem in fulfilling the quorum.

The Speaker was apprized that 21 meetings of the Public Accounts Committee have been held so far, but a single member (MLA) did not attend any meeting. Similarly, there have been 13 meetings of the Subordinate Legislation Committee, but an MLA did not attend even a single meeting.

The attendance of two members of the Committee on Public Undertakings is also not satisfactory. The committee constituted on the subject of education, technical education, vocational education and health services have held 12 meetings so far, but two of its members did not attend a single meeting.

Notably, the Speaker had constituted Assembly Committees of various departments for the year 2021-22 under the Rules of Procedures and Conduct of Business in the Haryana Legislative Assembly.

Gupta also informed that Haryana Vidhan Sabha has prepared a blueprint to ensure proper utilization of funds by the State Government.  He said that the committees of the Legislative Assembly will now be more active than before to check whether the government is properly using the budget passed for development works from the floor of the House.

The committees will now take cognizance of development works by going directly to the public along with holding regular meetings, he added.
