A few Sikh groups on Thursday observed the death anniversary of Beant Singh, one of the assassins of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi 29 years ago on this day in 1984, and honoured his son at a function held at the Golden Temple complex here.
Sarabjit Singh, son of Beant Singh, was honoured by the head of Akal Takht, the supreme temporal seat of the Sikhs, Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh, head of Damdami Taksal, Baba Harnam Singh Khalsa, working head of SAD (Panch Pardani), Harpal Singh Cheema, and Dal Khalsa spokesperson, Kanwar Pal.
A silver plaque was presented to Sarbjit, on which it was engraved “In honour of Beant SIngh, the brave soldier of Khalsa Panth, who embraced martyrdom to uphold the historic traditions and glory of the Panth by avenging the sacrilege of Darbar Sahib”. Satwant Singh and Beant Singh, who were in the security ring of Indira Gandhi, shot her down from close range Oct 31, 1984. Beant Singh was shot dead by Indira Gandhi’s security guards on the spot.
The gathering urged the SGPC to construct a memorial in memory of all the three in the Golden Temple Complex in any shape and at any place.
