Pawan Kumar, an employee of Haryana Government, turned out to be not less than God for four persons who got his organs after being declared brain dead at PGI here.

Family members of the deceased overcame their own tragedy and gave consent to donate his organs which impacted four lives on Friday.

Pawan Kumar, a resident of Rasulpur, distt. Bilaspur, Yamunanagar, was working in  Education Department  in Chachrauli, Haryana. On the fateful day of May 7, the deceased while going on his bike, was hit by a speeding car and was seriously injured. He was initially taken to a local hospital from where he was referred to PGI on May 8.

However, despite best of the efforts by the attending doctors, he could not be saved. PGI doctors said that they met twice on Thursday to decide about the case and at around 7.30 pm Pawan Kumar was declared brain dead.

Considering his critical condition, a team of transplant coordinators started educating the family about donating organs. “Since Pawan Kumar’s family believed in Nirankari sect and had heard about the noble cause of organ donation. So it was not difficult to convince them and they agreed in first counselling overcoming their own tragic loss.”  shared the transplant coordinators at PGI.

After the family’s consent, the doctors harvested the kidneys and corneas. According to PGI doctors, the corneas of the deceased were used in two recipients and the kidneys saved another 2 patients, giving a new lease of life to four patients in all.

The family gathered around the operation theatre described the deceased as a ‘kind  and benevolent man’ who always believed in helping others doing good for others. “Even in his death, he has done the same what he lived for by saving the lives of four others”, said Pawan Kumar’s Munish Kumari Gulati,  while trying to hold his own tears.

According to PGI doctors, there is a growing awareness among people about this altruistic cause of organ donation. Sharing the details, Dr. Vipin Kaushal, Nodal Officer, ROTTO said, “This magnanimous gesture of Pawan Kumar’s family has not only given a lease of new life four critical patients but has also set an example for others to come forward to join this noble initiative by pledging organs”.
