In the second such incident in less than a month, a UT Traffic constable was allegedly dragged for nearly half a kilometre by a car on Saturday after the constable asked its driver to stop at a check point in Industrial area here.

Sources in the police said that the incident took place when three persons were going in a car, after shopping from a mall in Industrial area. Their car was signaled to stop at a check post in Industrial area, as the driver and co-driver were not wearing seat belts.

The driver, Tanvinder Singh, was directed to give his driving license, but he attempted to escape from the check post and hit a traffic constable, Sandeep Kumar. An eye witness said, “The driver tried to run over the cop after he signaled him to stop his car. The constable, in his 30s, jumped on the bonnet to avoid being hit. The accused then drove the car for nearly half a kilometre before he was apprehended.”

The cop has sustained minor injuries. The accused, Tanvinder Singh, has been arrested in the matter while his two accomplices, Gagandeep Singh and Jitender Singh are absconding. The accused are residents of Sirhind in Punjab. They have been charged with attempt to murder.

The injured cop was rushed to Sector-32 Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for treatment, where the condition of the cop is said to be stable. Meanwhile a case has been registered against the three persons, Tanvinder Singh, Gagandeep Singh and Jitender Singh, said Devender Singh, SHO, PS-Industrial Area.

In a similar incident on August 14, a traffic policeman was seriously injured after he was dragged by a luxury car for over 500 metres in the city. The cop, Devinder Singh, had tried to stop the driver who was talking on his mobile phone. Police officials alleged that the two men in the car were drunk.
