Elected reps fight over 'trivial' issue

In a shameful display of violence, elected representatives fought each other in the Yamunanagar Municipal Corporation and did not even spare the women councillors. The issue was 'trivial' — occupation of a chair.

Eye witnesses said that Congress workers and some councillors of Yamunanagar Municipal Corporation thrashed BJP workers and councillors, including women councillors, in the Corporation office on Monday.

Talking to The Pioneer, KK Jain, Executive Officer of the Municipal Corporation said that the incident

took place around 12 noon when Pawan Kumar Bittu, deputy mayor of the corporation, from BJP, sat on the chair of Mayor in the Corporation during an informal meeting.

“All of sudden mayor Saroj Bala entered the room, Bittu vacated the chair and occupied another chair near to Mayor's chair. The Mayor didn't like it and started shouting at the Deputy Mayor. This got converted into a scuffle thereafter,” added Jain.

Both the groups then fought each other violently. Immediately, Congress workers rushed to the spot and started hitting BJP workers and

councillors, including women councillors.

Sangeeta Singhal, councillor of BJP, bore head injury in the brawl. local police had to call extra force to stop the fight between the two groups and maintain law and order.

Saroj Bala, Mayor of the Yamunanagar Municipal Corporation, alleged that deputy mayor Pawan Bittu had a habit of sitting on her seat in the corporation and she often had to wait for long to take back her seat.

"The same happened on Monday. He (Bittu) put his chair quite close to my chair and when I objected, he started misbehaving with me. My party workers did not tolerate it and it got converted into a scuffle from both sides," added an unapologetic Bala.

Sources said the difference between the two groups is not new in the corporation. In the recent MC elections, BJP won eight seats out of 20, but Congress with the help of independent councilors elected their Mayor. This widened the differences further.

Till late in the evening, the two warring groups were sitting in the local Police Station after complaints were filed.
