Punjab Government on Sunday gave approval to set up Authorised Testing Station (ATS) on public private partnership model in collaboration with the Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT), Pune. The state transport department gave nod to set up ATS and has roped in the CIRT as project management consultant to establish it, an official spokesperson said.

Initially, ATS will be set up to inspect and certify the in-use transport vehicles for their safety and emission compliance as per The Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, the spokesperson said. As per the new proposed Motor Vehicle Act, there is a proposal for mandatory inspection and certification of Non-Transport vehicles every five years, he said.

The ATS will house inspection lanes for testing various categories of vehicles, the spokesperson said, adding that the lane will have test equipment arranged like a production line through which the vehicles will go through for the inspections. He said that the pass or fail decision on the inspections would be entered in the computer network and at the end of the lane, the test report is generated. I&C centre will consist of Vehicle inspection lanes, Administration Office and Parking space for vehicles waiting for testing.
