Cyber Knife technology now to treat cancer in North-India

Cyber Knife is a universally recognised, non-invasive radio-surgery which will be soon available in ludhiana for the people of Punjab. Bl Kapur Cyber Knife center which started in New Delhi, November last year is planning to expand its services in North-India.

BlK Cyber Knife Center is the first in Asia-Pacific to introduce the most advanced Cyber Knife VSI technology for cancer treatment. In Punjab 215 people per lakh population has already lost their battle to cancer and 318 people per lakh population are suffering from the deadly disease says a door to door survey done between Oct to Dec 2012. According to experts, this technology will help to curb cancer cases in Punjab if detected at an early stage with much more accuracy and efficiency as compared to other cancer treatments available in the medical arena.

Cyber Knife will treat both cancerous and non-cancerous tumors anywhere in the body, including the prostate, lungs, brain, spine, liver, pancreas and kidneys. It is a painless treatment with improved patient comfort. It does not require the use of anesthesia and is feasible on an outpatient basis with little or no recovery period, allowing patients to almost immediately return to normal activities. Dr Shikha Halder of Radiation Oncology Centre BlK said, “The Cyber Knife VSI Robotic Radiosurgery System is a revolutionary development in cancer treatment.  It allows far superior reach and maneuverability to previously inaccessible and inoperable lesions such as lesions involving the spine and pancreas. For those of us who have struggled to address these problems for so long, this comes as a significant development in cancer therapy.”

This is an image-guided robotic technology which continually tracks patient movement and confirms tumor location prior to beam delivery, making it possible to treat even the most surgically complex tumors including those that move with respiration such as lung and pancreas tumors. S HUKKU, Radiation Oncologist, Bl Kapur Super Specialty Hospital said, “What makes this technology unique is its ability to deliver higher doses of radiation to the tumor while greatly minimizing radiation exposure to healthy tissue and vital organs in the vicinity of the targeted tumor, resulting in no side effects or post-treatment complications.” “The treatment delivers high doses of radiation to tumors with extreme accuracy. This technology offers a revolutionary therapy solution for patients who have inoperable or surgically complex tumors, or who may be looking for a non-surgical alternative,” he added. The cost of this treatment ranges from 2.5 to 3 lakh per patient.
