Congress demands CBI probe into drug trade

PNS

A day after Punjab’s former DGP Shashi Kant sent alarm bells ringing in the political circles by naming two Cabinet Ministers among other politicians involved in drug trade, the Punjab Congress on Wednesday demanded an impartial enquiry.

The party maintained that the inquiry be conducted either by a sitting judge of the High Court or the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the “startling disclosures” made by ex-DGP Shashi Kant. Earlier also, the Congress has been insisting on carrying out independent inquiry in the drug trafficking case, alleging involvement of senior politicians. The party, making every possible effort, had moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court and hold hunger strike that die its own death with senior Congress leader and former chief minister opposing the party’s move.

“Now that Shashi Kant has categorically revealed the names of six powerful politicians including Ministers in the drug peddling, there is no reason why the SAD-BJP Government must not disclose full details of dossier of drug mafia prepared by the Intelligence department, then headed by Shashi Kant,” said party spokesperson Sukhpal Singh Khaira.

“We the Congress cannot merely keep quiet because one name of a senior Congress leader and MlA OP Soni has appeared in the list. The burning issue of drug menace cannot be pushed under the carpet for any partisan interest. It is a matter of deep concern for lakhs of households of Punjab, whose children are being engulfed in the dangerous drug menace. let there be a fair probe and if more congressmen are involved in the trade, let their names also be made public,” he said.
