Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh on Monday requested his Madhya Pradesh counterpart Shivraj Chouhan to look into the matter of the alleged damage to a gurdwara in Indore during a recent demolition drive.

He asked Chouhan to take all possible steps to assuage the sentiments of the Sikh community, which had been hurt by the reported excessive action of the police and municipal authorities.

Capt Amarinder spoke to Shivraj Chouhan on Monday, following reports in a section of the media that gurdwara Kartar Kiran in Indore district had been damaged during the demolition exercise.

Taking serious note of the reports suggesting that sanctity of religious place had been defiled and concerned authorities had also misbehaved with the Sikhs there during the demolition, Capt Amarinder requested MP Chief Minister to get an inquiry instituted to ascertain the veracity of media reports, and take suitable action against anyone found guilty of any excesses.

Capt Amarinder conveyed to his counterpart in Madhya Pradesh his serious concern at the possibility of tensions flaring up in the wake of the incident and urged him to intervene to ensure that the issue is resolved at the earliest, said a spokesperson in the CM’s office.

MP Chief Minister has assured Capt Amarinder that he would personally look into the matter and ensure the Sikh community’s welfare.

He further told the Punjab Chief Minister that his Government was committed to upholding the principles of secularism and would take immediate steps to protect the interests of the Sikh community, which was an integral part of the State’s population, according to the spokesperson.
