Chandigarh to set up wi-fi zones

PNS

Chandigarh residents would soon be able to enjoy internet access at prominent places of Chandigarh with the UT Administration deciding to set up wi-fi zones at five prominent spots in the city.

The wi-fi zones would come up at ISBT Sector 43, ISBT Sector 17, Market Sector 17 E, Market Sector 22 D and Sukhna lake. The residents didn’t need to have a laptop to use internet in these identified hotspots as internet access would be available to all wi-fi enabled devices such as mobile phones, tablets, notebooks among others in the wi-fi zones.

The move was aimed at creating a knowledge-based society through extensive use of Information Technology. The UT Administration had set up the first free ‘city wi-fi’ zone in December 2013. First wi-fi enabled Sampark Centre was opened in Sector 21. The free Wi-Fi hotspot is enabling the residents visiting the Sampark Centre in Sector 21 to stay connected to the Internet through their smartphones, tablets and laptops.

At the time of using the wi-fi service, the users would have to register their mobile number as proof of identity. This free wi-fi access at Sampark Centre is a secured system and is available during the Sampark Centre’s working hours. A senior official of the UT Administration said that five locations have been identified to set up Wi-fi zones. SMS-based access and authentication mechanism (in sync with norms set by TRAI) would be  used so that no operator/manpower is required at the identified five  locations.

A 24x7 support call centre would be set up by the service provider for smooth implementation of the whole proposal.
