In less than a week’s time after three cops were caught red handed while taking a bribe of Rs10,000, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) have arrested another UT cop while taking bribe from an auto-rickshaw driver on Tuesday.

The accused, Paramjeet Singh, head constable of Chandigarh Traffic Police, had demanded bribe from the complainant for allowing him to drive his Mohali registered auto rickshaw in Chandigarh.

Sources in the CBI said that the complainant Narottam, auto rickshaw driver, had approached the CBI on Friday with his complaint.

In his complaint to the CBI, Narottam told that Paramjeet, deputed at Kisan Bhawan light point had challaned him for driving the auto rickshaw in Chandigarh without permission. “However,

I paid the penalty to UT traffic police and Paramjeet again stopped me at Kisan Bhawan and offered to allow me to drive in Chandigarh if I pay him a bribe of Rs1,200 every month,” said the complainant.

They struck a deal at Rs1,000 per month. The complainant later approached the CBI and a trap was laid at Kisan Bhawan, where Paramjeet was caught red handed on Tuesday, said Tarun Guaba, Superintendent of Police (SP) CBI Anti-Corruption Bureau.

Meanwhile, the CBI is now questioning the accused to find out if he has been taking money from other auto rickshaw drivers as well, added the official.

On September 3, three UT cops including Rajesh Shukla (SHO), Mukesh Kumar and Dilbaj Singh, posted with Sector 34 police station, were arrested by CBI for allegedly demanding and accepting bribe from a parking contractor. The complainant had told the CBI that the cops were demanding monthly payment for August and September.
