In a major turn of events in the multi-crore drug haul that has international links too, a Canadian NRI on Wednesday accused the senior SP Hardyal Singh Mann for falsely imprisoning his husband, Manpreet Gill, in the case despite accepting Rs one crore bribe, accusations which were completely denied it as "baseless" by the senior cop.
Mann maintained that the synthetic drugs were seized from Manpreet, and the allegations against him were completely baseless. "The case is presently in the court, and the matter is nearing its end in Anoop Kahlon case, and that is why she is making baseless allegations against us to divert the attention," said Mann. The allegations, by the Canadian NRI Amarjeet Kaur Basra, were made on the basis of a sting operation of the police officials involved in the case, besides the call records of the cops, and documentary evidence.
The sting operation showed that the inquiry officer of the case, Dalbir Grewal, and his other teammates have accepted that they were accepting that Rs one crore have been taken from Manpreet and he has been falsely implicated.
The drug case, unearthed in 2013, had shook the nation after the names of Olympian Vijender Singh surfaced, who was later absolved of all the charges. NRI narcotics dealer Anoop Singh Kahlon, and Punjab Police dismissed DSP and former wrestler Jadish Singh Bhola, were in jail in the matter. Moreover, the names of a Cabinet Minister and son of another Cabinet Minister has also surfaced during the investigations.
Amarjeet, during a Press conference on Wednesday in Chandigarh, stated that Fatehgarh Police personnel in civil clothes had entered their house at Pakhowal Road in ludhiana on March 2, 2013, and had forcibly taken away Manpreet and his friend, Robin Grewal.
Projecting them as CBI sleuths, they searched the entire home but got nothing, she said, adding that she along with Manpreet's father Dalit Singh, her two children, were detained by four men and one woman in their house till March 4.
"They threatened us from informing any of our relative about Manpreet. On March 5, they left Robin Grewal at Delhi's Indira Gandhi Airport and he left for Canada, but Manpreet was still in custody. later, we were informed that Manpreet was arrested after a relative of Kahlon, Gabbar Singh, named him," she added.
Amarjit had accused Mann for asking for Rs one crore for releasing her husband, and that too from Manpreet, saying that money should be brought from abroad. She alleged while Rs 50 lakh was taken by Dalbir Grewal on March 7 in Delhi, the remaining Rs 50 lakh was paid on March 8 in ludhiana. later, not releasing Manpreet, police had demanded for Rs 50 lakh more.
