A day after BJP announced the candidature of actor Kirron Kher from the Chandigarh lok Sabha constituency, several party leaders rushed to Delhi on Sunday demanding re-consideration of party’s decision.

A number of supporters of the local BJP unit chief Sanjay Tandon expressed support for the candidature of their leader and met Central party leaders. The party’s Chandigarh unit spokesperson Ravinder Pathania, said, “We have met party’s president Rajnath Singh and party’s in-charge for Chandigarh affairs, Aarti Mehra and have requested them to re-consider the decision on Chandigarh’s candidate.”

“The leaders have assured us to look into the grievances of party workers. Another meeting of BJP’s Central Election Committee will be held on March 18 and we expect the issue would be taken up in the meeting,” said the party spokesperson, who was also the part of delegation that met the Central BJP leaders on Sunday.  Chandigarh BJP chief Sanjay Tandon is also in New Delhi and is said to have met senior party leaders on Sunday.

Rejecting the three local contenders - two former MPs and the city unit president - the BJP had on Saturday declared 58-year-old actor Kirron Kher as its candidate from Chandigarh. The party workers in Chandigarh on Sunday protested against Kher’s candidature from Chandigarh and also burnt her effigy. The wife of actor Anupam Kher, Kirron will be contesting against four-time MP Pawan Kumar Bansal of Congress. Also in the fray is former Miss India Universe Gul Panag of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Jannat Jahan of BSP.

Kirron is expected to reach Chandigarh on March 18 from Mumbai.
