Chandigarh BJP on Monday demanded strict action against the errant UT police officials who had resorted to lathicharge on BJP workers in Industrial area Phase I on Sunday.

The party also demanded strict action against Congress workers who pelted stones on BJP workers who were protesting against local MP Pawan Kumar Bansal.

A party delegation headed by city BJP chief Sanjay Tandon met the UT Inspector General of Inspector (IGP) RP Upadhayay on Monday demanding strict action against the police officials and city Congress workers and leaders.

The party gave a representation against Congress workers and UT police for beating, assaulting, manhandling the BJP workers.

A day before, a scuffle had broken out between the BJP protestors and Congress workers. In the incident, a dozen were injured and vehicles were also damaged. The BJP workers had arrived to protest against local MP Bansal who was scheduled to arrive at a function in Industrial area.

BJP alleged that both the Congress workers and UT police have beaten mercilessly the party workers when the latter were peacefully demonstrating their protest against Bansal. “Instead of stopping the Congress workers, the UT police intimidated them to beat our workers,” alleged the party.

Tandon alleged, “Wife of a party worker, Dukhram was also attacked by a Congress worker in Colony No. 4.”

After the meeting with IGP, Tandon said, “The IGP has assured us of strict action against Congress workers and errant police officials.”
