BJP condemns Cong for water crisis in City

Chandigarh BJP on Wednesday criticised the ruling Congress for failing to restore normal water supply in the city even after about a week.

The city residents have been facing water shortage for almost a week now after pipelines at Kajauli waterworks — city’s primary source of water were damaged. The city BJP leaders alleged that Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh has failed to provide basic amenities to the city denisens. It’s been almost one week, yet the city residents are reeling under acute water shortage.

Senior BJP leaders said that Mayor Subash Chawla is making false claims of providing adequate water supply through tanks in various parts of the city. People in Chandigarh are facing tough time from last one week due to water shortage. Only 35 water tankers have been deployed for providing water to the whole city, said BJP.

The party demanded that adequate numbers of water tanks should be sent to the areas affected due to water crisis in the city. “The MCC should have made an alternate arrangement for water supply here in case of any technical snag at city’s primary source of water—Kajauli waterworks. But the MCC has failed to do so,” alleged BJP.

The party further alleged that the local MP and former Union Minister of Water Resources, Pawan Kumar Bansal has also neglected the needs of the city during his tenure as Union Minister.  Bansal should have looked into the basic demand of water supply to the city, said BJP leaders. “If Congress cannot provide drinking water to the residents, they have no right to remain in power,” demanded city BJP.

Over the past few days, the water supply to Chandigarh has been affected with most areas receiving water at low pressure during morning and evening hours. As per the officials of MCC, the water crisis is likely to continue till August 31.

The repair of damaged pipelines of Phase III and IV of Kajauli waterworks have not been completed over the past six days.

From Kajauli, Chandigarh gets 67 MGD water out of its total supply of 87 against a demand of 116 MGD. SAS Nagar gets 10 MGD from Kajauli as part of its total supply of 15.2 MGD.Due to ongoing repair at Kajauli waterworks, the MCC has reduced water supply to two hours each in morning and evening.

The Sectors where water supply is through Kajauli waterworks are receiving morning supply between 2 am and 7 am while in some Sectors under waterworks, there is no evening water supply. MCC has also banned washing of cars and courtyards till August 31.
